Travel Tips: When is the Best Time to Visit Jaisalmer?

The Short Answer

October to March. That is the golden window.

The Detailed Answer

After eighteen years of guiding travellers through the Thar, we have learned that timing matters — but it also depends on what kind of experience you are seeking.

October — November (Autumn)

The heat has broken, the skies are clear, and the desert begins to cool down at night. This is a beautiful, quieter time to visit. Temperatures range from 15°C to 32°C. Nights in the desert are pleasant, not cold.

December — January (Peak Winter)

The most popular time, and for good reason. Days are warm and golden (20-25°C), but desert nights can drop to 2-5°C. We provide thick blankets and warm tents, but bring a jacket for the campfire.

Pro tip: If you want the desert almost to yourself, come in early December or late January — the holiday crowds thin out.

February — March (Spring)

Our personal favourite. The weather is perfect, the desert blooms with wildflowers after winter rains, and the light is extraordinary for photography. Days are 25-32°C, nights are comfortable.

April — September (Summer & Monsoon)

We do not recommend this period. Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 42°C in May and June, and while the monsoon brings some relief in July-August, it is not ideal for desert experiences.

What to Pack

• Layers — desert days are warm, nights are cold
• A scarf or dupatta — protects against sun and wind
• Comfortable walking shoes — for dune walks
• A camera — the light here is like nowhere else

Final Thought
